My very favourite thing in Iceland, in a country of astonishing sights, was unquestionably the Blue Lagoon.
More than a few people have dismissed the Blue Lagoon as being “too touristy” but I’m here to say that you need to visit.
Haha, there’s a reason things are touristy — it’s because tourists like to visit!
It’s expensive, true, but after you buy your ticket you can stay as long as you like. TBH after about two hours I was ready to leave. It’s not that big and you can only really float about for so long.
PRO TIP: My main tip would be to NOT go to the Blue Lagoon as a stop from the airport to the city centre if you’ve had a long flight. The tour bus companies offer this package (Airport pickup-Blue Lagoon stop-Reykjavik city centre) as a way to fill time before you can check in to your hotel. But we saw many people on our bus who had done this (we could tell because they had luggage with them) and they looked utterly exhausted. This visit is probably once-in-a-lifetime, and you want to enjoy it, not drag yourself there and be tired for all of it.
PRO TIP No. 2: I bought one of those airtight plastic covers for my phone and I’m so happy I did. I was quite nervous about dropping my phone in the water even with the cover.
Here are a few more important things to know:
1. You absolutely need sunglasses; the glare off the water will blind you if you don’t have shades.
2. Go early. We picked at 9 a.m. time slot, which meant leaving super early as the Blue Lagoon is about 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik. The bus picked us up at our requested time but for departures, it just picks up at regular intervals; you do not need to pre-book a time.
3. Everyone gets a basic mask that’s included in the ticket, but you can upgrade if you want.
4. I loved the swim-up bar. Everyone gets a drink with their entry ticket.
5. These spinners in the change rooms do a great job getting the water out of your swimsuit for easier transport back to the hotel.
6. Fill up before you go ... I've never seen such expensive food. Thank goodness we'd eaten a big breakfast because I just couldn't bring myself to pay $7.65 CAD for a small bag of chips.
