New York's 5 observation towers: Which is best?

Summit One Vanderbilt

Which NYC observation tower should you visit? My guide to which towers are worth the admission ticket.

New York has 5 major towers, and none of them are cheap, so I hope this post will help you to decide how to spend your hard-earned vacation dollars. (Prices are accurate as of February 2024)

Here are my ratings from best to last. (YMMV) Don’t make the mistake in No. 3!

1. TOP OF THE ROCK

My top pick is Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center for its superb views of Central Park, the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center and even the Statue of Liberty. Adult tickets are $40 to $55. Pro tip: If you can, add a tour of Rockefeller Center itself. It’s an excellent tour and you’ll get a discount.

2. SUMMIT ONE VANDERBILT (MAIN PHOTO)

This tower opened in 2021 and it’s a very close second for its excellent views and very cool Mirror Room. Pro tip: Don’t pay to go to the higher floor unless you have a lot of money to spend. I only went to the lower floor and the views from here are spectacular. Adult tickets start at $42.

3. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

The views from here are also superb. But don’t make this mistake: Be aware that if you’re in the Empire State Building, it obviously won’t be in your photo and IMO, the Empire State Building is the iconic symbol of New York. Adult tickets start at $44.

4. EDGE NYC

I was meh about Edge NYC, the other new tower in NYC. IMO the views are not as good as at No. 1, 2 & 3, and there are few non-view features. I was in and out in under an hour. Adult tickets start at $36. There’s a City Climb feature that costs extra if you’re feeling daredevilish.

5. ONE WORLD OBSERVATORY

This tower is in Lower Manhattan so you’ll get great views of the Statue of Liberty. But IMO this is just too far from Midtown to see the iconic buildings like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. Adult tickets start at $44.
